Library Service Center - Rice University

Houston, Texas

The Rice Library Service Center (RLSC) is a high-density book storage facility designed to accommodate between 1.75 and 2.0 million volumes. This off-site, 18,500 square foot depository enhances and expands Rice University's Fondren Library by offering substantial storage space along with modern and efficient filing and archiving systems. The 28,750 SF facility is divided into two main sections: a two-story office and processing area, and a three-story open volume known as the book storage vault, which features rows of high-density modular shelving. The vault is meticulously controlled to create an optimal environment for storing less frequently used and delicate materials, maintaining a consistent temperature of 50 degrees Fahrenheit and 30 percent humidity year-round—ideal conditions for the long-term preservation of paper products and film-based materials such as microfilm, videotapes, and slides.

The building's exterior is primarily constructed from a customized tilt-up concrete wall system, designed to provide both protection and a dynamic visual appeal. The cascading profile of the walls adds interest and reduces the imposing nature of the largely windowless structure. Finished in a bright, earthy green, the building resembles a geometric topiary set against a vast green landscape.
