The Rice Library Service Center is a 18,500 SF high-density archival storage facility designed to house up to 2.0 million volumes in support of Fondren Library. The off-site depository expands the university’s research capacity by providing efficient, long-term storage and retrieval of less frequently accessed materials.
The facility includes a two-story office and processing area and a three-story open-volume storage vault with high-density modular shelving. The vault is precisely controlled at 50°F and 30% relative humidity year-round to ensure optimal preservation of paper-based collections and film media. Mechanical systems were designed to maintain stable environmental conditions with minimal fluctuation, supporting long-term archival integrity and operational efficiency.
