Brockman Hall for Opera is a state-of-the-art facility that expands the Shepherd School of Music’s capabilities, providing world-class rehearsal and performance spaces for its exceptional opera and instrumental musicians.
The 94,319 SF structure, located on the west side of Rice University’s campus, faces Alice Pratt Brown Hall and features the Lucian and Nancy Morrison Theater, along with essential back-of-house facilities, a scene shop, rehearsal rooms, practice spaces, offices, and an elegant lobby. Designed as an educational facility, the Opera Performance Hall and two rehearsal spaces offer superior acoustics that both challenge and support performers at every stage of their development.
The venue’s main performance hall accommodates 600 patrons, while the orchestra pit seats up to 70 musicians. Additional spaces include private practice rooms, teaching studios, and classrooms. The facility is also equipped with a fully operational scene shop, costume shop, and dressing rooms to support large-scale productions.
Rice University leaders emphasize the significance of Brockman Hall in shaping the campus’s future. Robert Yekovich, Dean of the Shepherd School of Music, noted that the opera house marks a shift from a university “based in sciences to one that’s based in arts and sciences.” Campus Architect David Rodd described it as “the most significant building we build this century.”
This project is LEED Silver Certified, demonstrating Rice University's commitment to sustainability in architectural design.
