Originally opened in 1971, the Rothko Chapel was conceived as a sacred space for reflection and the permanent home for Mark Rothko’s “Black Paintings”, a series considered among the most significant artistic works of the 20th century. Designed as a non-denominational spiritual center, the chapel has been a place of inspiration for visitors from around the world.
The recent renovation, led by Architecture Research Office (ARO), focused on restoring and enhancing the original experience envisioned by Rothko. The 4,000 SF chapel underwent significant upgrades, including a redesigned skylight and lighting system, which carefully calibrates natural and artificial light to showcase the paintings as intended. Climate control improvements ensure long-term preservation of the artwork, while the reimagined entry vestibule creates a more welcoming transition into the meditative space.
Beyond the chapel itself, the project expanded the Rothko Foundation campus with 15,000 SF of new facilities. These additions provide office spaces, meeting rooms, archival storage, and maintenance infrastructure, strengthening the institution’s ability to support its mission. Completed in September 2020 with a $24.5 million budget, this renovation and expansion honor Rothko’s legacy while securing the chapel’s future as a place of artistic, spiritual, and intellectual engagement.
Strategically built atop the Fannin Street Parking Garage, the location ensures seamless access to the museum’s other facilities, allowing conservators to work closely with curators and museum staff. The project also required the relocation of existing cooling towers and emergency generators to accommodate the new structure.
Designed by Lake|Flato Architects, this $13 million facility is an integral part of the MFAH campus transformation, reinforcing the museum’s mission to preserve cultural heritage for future generations.
